Spelling Wizards

So the question came up about where I wrote to the right of this blog...which is it... Southern Belle or Southern Bell??  I need help, so those of you with an opinion...comment!  Let me know what you think is the correct spelling because I am clueless!!

Definitely belle. I looked it up in the dictionary and the definition of "belle" is a popular attractive girl or woman. A "bell" is a hollow metallic device that vibrates and gives forth a ringing sound when struck. You are a "belle" for sure.

I know it's "belle." "Belle" is the feminine form of the word "beautiful." (That is why the princess in Beauty and the Beast is named "Belle.") The term "southern belle" is a play on words, in fact. It brings to mind the pre-civil war southern women (like Scarlette O'Hara) who where beautiful and wore grand hoop-skirt dresses. When ladies walked in these dresses, the swishing of the hoop-skirts looked like bells ringing. Hence the term, "southern belle."
